Angels and Demons Opening Deconstruction

The scene opens with the sound of chanting and prayer this signifies that the film with be about religion. Next we see men dressed in red destroying a ring with a cross, this could signify that there will be destruction and death of the old because they are destroying something that is old; this is followed by a semantic code of the popes death to create continuity in the narrative so we understand what just happened. We see international media coverage outside the Vatican, this could be show us how modern world will be mixed with old traditions. The scene of the popes death and religion is then juxtaposed with the scene of a scientific lab, this could be a signifier that religion and science will be mixed throughout the film and also show the relationship between science and religion which many people already believe is bad. In the lab we see that there is something being created, this scene after the popes death could show the death of religion and the birth of science. After this we see a scientist wearing a white collar with a black shirt, this is usually connotated to priests clothing, therefore this shows another link between science and religion. Next we see a dolly shot of a women, this could show us that she is a main character because this is the first dolly shot of a single character. Next we see a close up of a missing object, a blood drop then discovering a dead body, this shows us that there will be conflict seen throughout the piece.

When we are introduced to Robert Langdon we see the denotation of the protagonist of the piece being made attractive by his intelligence which is usually seen in many action and adventure films, especially being seen in indiana jones. We hear Robert Langdon describing the Illuminati, automatically we are told about the relationship between the Catholic church and the Illuminati and we then realise that they are binary oppositions. There are many lighthearted and humours comments being made by Robert Langdon, with sarcasm being juxtaposed with the seriousness of the 4 cardinals being kidnapped. Humour is seen in many Action/Adventure films so this follows the codes and conventions seen in this genre of film. We hear Robert Langdon saying "What do you want from me?" this is dialogue which is seen in many other Action/Adventure films, therefore following codes and conventions of this genre.
